LAKE MACQUARIE / ALUMINIUM WINDOW REPAINTS
Before repainting aluminium windows in Lake Macquarie, check the existing finish, frame condition and exposure around your home. A faded colour may be a straightforward reason to investigate repainting; peeling, pitting or operating problems need closer assessment first.
This checklist helps you prepare for an inspection and compare painting proposals. The aim is a clear scope for your windows, including preparation, protection, finish and ongoing care.

01 / CONDITION
Check the coating, exposed aluminium and window operation before choosing a colour.
02 / EXPOSURE
Explain which faces collect deposits, receive sun or sit under shelter.
03 / SCOPE
Agree on the surfaces, repairs, masking and drying arrangements in writing.
Lake Macquarie exposure: assess the property, not just the suburb
A coastal-facing home in Blacksmiths or Caves Beach and a sheltered property elsewhere around the lake should not automatically receive the same preparation allowance. These are examples of situations to assess, not a claim that every home in either suburb has the same conditions.
Tell the painter where you notice recurring deposits, which elevations are most exposed and how you currently clean the frames. Include sheltered returns, recessed windows and frames behind screens in the discussion. Conditions can differ between two sides of the same house.
For a lakeside home, describe what you actually see rather than assuming distance from the ocean settles the specification. Photographs of the worst areas and an inspection are more useful than a broad promise of “coastal-grade paint”.
What to check before booking aluminium-window painting
| What you notice | Question to ask | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Fading or chalkiness | Is this surface weathering, and is the existing coating still firmly attached? | Include close-ups in the inspection request. |
| Peeling or lifting edges | How much coating is unstable, and what preparation is included? | Ask how the sound boundary will be established. |
| Pitting or deposits on exposed aluminium | Is the problem superficial or is the frame significantly deteriorated? | Get the cause and repair limits assessed before covering it. |
| Leaks, stiff movement or damaged seals | Does the window need repair independently of the repaint? | Discuss a window specialist’s assessment where needed. |
| Unknown factory finish or previous repaint | Can the existing finish be identified and a compatible system confirmed? | Allow for testing or technical advice before a full application. |
Aluminium can corrode, but describing every problem as steel-like rust can lead to the wrong treatment. A new coating also does not repair a leaking installation or restore failed hardware. Separate those issues from the colour change.
The Haymes coating we use for aluminium windows
Identify whether the frame has a powder-coated finish, an anodised finish, an earlier repaint or exposed aluminium. Those conditions should not be treated as interchangeable. Ask the applicator to confirm the preparation and coating supplier’s requirements for the surface found on site.
Procover Painting uses Haymes Paint Industrial Coating Solutions 302 Quick Dry Enamel for aluminium-window painting. Haymes describes it as a fast-drying industrial alkyd enamel and lists aluminium among its substrates.
Match the product to the exposure
Haymes’ 302 product data sheet specifies interior and covered or sheltered exterior surfaces. For exposed coastal frames, the proposed system should be confirmed with Haymes for the actual conditions.
Four details to ask for in the specification
- How contaminants and unstable coating will be addressed.
- How adhesion will be assessed and any failed areas prepared.
- The named primer, where required, and compatible topcoat.
- The application, drying and service restrictions for the selected system.
Haymes specifies ICS Metal Etch Primer for aluminium in the 302 data sheet and gives separate preparation for sound previously painted surfaces. Identify what is actually exposed before specifying preparation; do not assume bare-metal instructions apply unchanged over an existing factory coating.
The data sheet calls for thorough sanding and cleaning with Haymes ICS Wax & Grease Remover. Its spray schedule specifies one light coat followed by two even full coats, avoiding heavy wet coats. This is a professional-use product; the applicator should follow the current product and safety data sheets.
Protect the glass, seals and window function
Agree which surfaces will be painted: outside faces, inside faces, opening sections, returns and any adjacent trim. This prevents a quote for the visible face from being mistaken for a complete inside-and-out repaint.
The masking plan should identify glass, seals, locks, moving parts and drainage openings that must remain clear according to the window manufacturer. A&L explains the purpose of window drainage or weep holes; they should not be treated as cosmetic gaps to cover.

Discuss access before work begins, including upper-level windows, garden beds, screens, curtains and furniture. Ask what must be moved and who is responsible. If an opening needs to remain unavailable during drying, plan ventilation and household access around that restriction.
Choose colour and sheen in context
Compare the proposed finish with your roof, brickwork, cladding, screens and interior trim. View a sample outdoors and from inside the room. A colour that works with an exterior wall may create a stronger contrast against the indoor scheme.
If matching an existing finish, approve a physical sample in the proposed product and sheen. Weathering and different coating types can affect the match. Ask about any window-manufacturer restrictions before choosing a much darker colour.
What to send for a Lake Macquarie window-painting quote
- Your suburb and whether the work is external, internal or both.
- The number and type of windows, including fixed, sliding and opening sections.
- A wide photo of each elevation and close-ups of damaged areas.
- The existing colour and finish, if known, and any previous repaint details.
- Information about deposits, exposure, leaks, stiff movement or damaged seals.
- Access restrictions, upper-storey work, screens and household timing needs.
- The colour and sheen you are considering, or the finish you want to match.
Ask the written proposal to distinguish preparation, cosmetic repairs, window repairs, coating products and exclusions. Confirm whether removing and refitting screens or other items is included. A useful comparison is the complete scope, not just the number of windows or the lowest total.
Aftercare: follow the finish that is actually on the frame
Request written cleaning and maintenance guidance for the completed repaint. Record the product, colour, sheen and completion date so later care and touch-ups can be discussed accurately. Keep the window maker’s instructions for seals, drainage and operating components too.
Ask for Haymes-compatible aftercare instructions for the completed 302 finish, including when cleaning can begin and which cleaning products are suitable. Keep the original window manufacturer’s care guidance for the glass, seals, drainage and hardware. A repaint and an original factory finish may have different maintenance requirements.
When checking the frames, look for lifting edges, new deposits, damaged seals or water collecting where it did not previously. Photograph changes and seek advice early rather than covering a developing problem with a casual touch-up.
Repainting, replacement and warranty questions
Can aluminium windows be repainted without replacing them?
Often repainting is worth assessing when the frames and operation remain serviceable. Significant deterioration, leaks or performance problems may change the decision. See our painting-versus-replacement guide for that broader comparison.
Is on-site spray painting the same as powder coating?
No. Powder coating uses a factory curing process; an on-site repaint uses a specified liquid coating system. Ask what is actually being proposed, rather than treating the two names as equivalent finishes.
How long will a coastal window repaint last?
There is no single reliable interval for every frame. Condition, preparation, the selected system, exposure and maintenance all matter. Ask for the applicable written workmanship and product terms, including exclusions. A warranty period is not a guaranteed repaint interval.
Should every window be repainted at the same time?
Ask for options based on condition, access and the finish you want across the home. Staging may help your budget, but check colour consistency, repeated access costs and any areas needing attention sooner.
Arrange an aluminium-window repaint assessment
Procover Painting provides aluminium-window painting for homes in Lake Macquarie. Send your photographs and suburb so the condition, access and proposed finish can be discussed before a scope is agreed.
