Haymes vs Dulux: Interior and Exterior Paint Compared

A side-by-side comparison of the Haymes Paint and Dulux logos. On the left, the Haymes Paint logo is displayed on a dark blue background, with "Haymes" written in a stylish, handwritten font and "PAINT" in uppercase letters beneath it. On the right, the Dulux logo is set on a white background, featuring the brand name "Dulux" in bold, white uppercase letters within a navy blue rectangular box, with a thin red underline.

Choosing between Haymes and Dulux starts with the job you are painting. A washable lounge-room finish and a coating for coastal weatherboards have different requirements, even when the tins carry the same brand name.

This Haymes vs Dulux guide compares two interior wall paints — Expressions and Wash&Wear — and two exterior ranges — Solashield and Weathershield. It combines current Australian manufacturer information with practical advice for homeowners planning a repaint in Newcastle and the Hunter.

Quick answer: is Haymes better than Dulux?

Neither brand is the best choice for every home. For interior walls, compare Haymes Expressions Low Sheen with Dulux Wash&Wear Low Sheen: both manufacturers describe washable, stain-resistant finishes. For exteriors, compare Haymes Solashield with Dulux Weathershield using the instructions for your timber, render or metal.

Choose the complete coating system, preferred colour and finish, then compare current project quotes. A longer guarantee or a cheaper tin does not establish which paint will perform better on your home.

Compare equivalent products and sheen levels. “Haymes Ultra Premium” is a range description; the interior wall product here is Expressions Low Sheen. “Wash&Wear” also includes different variants, so check the full name on the tin.

Haymes Expressions: strengths and limitations

Strengths: Haymes positions Expressions Low Sheen as a durable, washable interior coating with resistance to marks and stains. It is a sensible product to shortlist when you want an easy-to-maintain wall finish.

Check: Its coverage claims do not prove that it needs fewer coats than Dulux. The existing colour, repairs, chosen tint and application all affect the result. Select the exact finish suitable for the room rather than assuming every Expressions product is interchangeable.

Dulux Wash&Wear: strengths and limitations

Strengths: Dulux describes the standard Low Sheen product as a hard-wearing finish for interior walls, including hallways and family rooms. Its 101 Barrier Technology is intended to help remove common household marks with a wet cloth.

Check: Standard Wash&Wear and specialist variants have different specifications. Match the actual product to your room, particularly where humidity or difficult colour changes affect the choice.

Which would we choose for interior walls?

Shortlist both. Start with the finish you want, the cleaning the walls will need and the condition of the existing coating. View colour samples in the room during the day and under evening lighting. A colour name matched into another brand may look different, so approve the actual paint and finish before ordering the full quantity.

For a whole-home repaint, specify ceilings, walls and trims separately. Our interior painting service can help turn those choices into a clear scope of work.

Exterior: Haymes Solashield vs Dulux Weathershield

Solashield is the Haymes product. Solagard is a Wattyl range. For this comparison, the relevant Dulux exterior range is Weathershield.

Main decisionMatch the primer, topcoat and application conditions to the substrate and exposure. Guarantee periods are not predicted repaint intervals.

Haymes Solashield: strengths and limitations

Strengths: Its stated UV and salt resistance makes it worth considering for exposed exterior walls. Check: Coastal metal still needs the specified corrosion-protection system. The Low Sheen data sheet requires a minimum of two coats, or three on bare timber, with surface-specific preparation.

The guarantee is conditional and provides paint for an affected area when a qualifying defect is established. Previous coating failure and inadequate preparation are among the exclusions.

Dulux Weathershield: strengths and limitations

Strengths: Dulux describes MaxiFlex as helping the coating move with the surface and lists sun protection and resistance to colour fading. Check: Follow the specific preparation and primer instructions, especially on metal near the sea.

The residential guarantee concerns peeling, flaking and blistering, subject to its conditions. It excludes colour fade and substrate failure. Read the terms rather than interpreting the guarantee as a promise that the exterior will never need maintenance.

Coastal homes, weatherboards and render

Coastal homes: Identify the material first. Salt-contaminated walls and corroding metal need different preparation. Remove contaminants and use the manufacturer’s specified metal primer where required; salt resistance in a topcoat does not replace corrosion treatment.

Weatherboards: Check adhesion, weathered timber, open joints and moisture damage. Repair the cause of deterioration and follow the instructions for bare or tannin-rich timber before choosing the topcoat.

Render: Check for cracks, moisture, powdery surfaces and deposits. Confirm curing and sealing requirements for new masonry. Standard exterior paint should not be assumed to repair moving cracks.

For a wall in full sun, check the cladding manufacturer’s colour restrictions and plan application around the paint’s weather limits. See our exterior paint guide for a wider comparison, including Taubmans and Wattyl.

Haymes vs Dulux price: compare the whole job

There is no reliable rule that Haymes is always cheaper or Dulux is always better value. Prices vary with the product, sheen, tint base, pack size, supplier and promotion. Ask for current prices for equivalent products on the same day.

Paint only: delivery, preparation materials and painting labour are excluded. Prices and availability can change, and other tint bases, colours, pack sizes or trade accounts may be priced differently. Select the stated colour and pack size on the source page, then confirm the final price with your supplier. Per-litre figures are rounded to two decimal places.

The 4-litre interior packs differ by only five cents in this snapshot, and the 4-litre exterior packs by 95 cents. Larger packs have a lower price per litre, but choose the quantity from the area to be painted, the required coats and the product’s stated coverage. Tin-price differences should not outweigh product suitability, preparation or the complete project quote.

  • Match the specification: Compare the same purpose, finish and quantity, with GST included.
  • Include the preparation: Allow for cleaners, repairs, primer and any specialist treatment.
  • Count the required coats: Budget from the product instructions and surface condition. A coat that hides the old colour may still fall short of the required coating system.
  • Compare painting quotes: Check access, repairs, preparation, product names, coats and exclusions alongside the total.

A small difference in tin price may have little effect on a project that needs substantial preparation. Keep a labelled record of the product, sheen, colour and batch for future maintenance and touch-ups.

Preparation matters more than a brand ranking

  1. Inspect the surface. Check the existing coating and resolve leaks, rot or other defects before painting.
  2. Clean and prepare. Remove contaminants and loose paint, make suitable repairs, sand where required and remove dust.
  3. Choose compatible primers. Bare timber, repairs, masonry and metal may need different products, even under a self-priming topcoat.
  4. Apply the specified system. Follow coat numbers, spreading rates, drying times and weather limits for the exact product.
  5. Allow curing and plan maintenance. Follow the manufacturer’s cleaning advice and inspect exposed areas regularly.

Both interior products are described as low VOC by their manufacturers. That description is not a guarantee of zero emissions or suitability for every person. Read the safety data sheet and provide ventilation during painting and drying.

Procover’s perspective for Newcastle and Hunter homes

Our work focuses on homes in Newcastle and the Hunter. The useful question for a local repaint is which system suits this home’s surfaces, exposure and intended finish. We recommend assessing those details on site before settling on a brand.

This guide does not assign laboratory scores or claim that one brand has outlasted the other in a controlled Procover trial. Product features are attributed to manufacturers; the preparation and quote advice reflects the practical decisions involved in local painting work. You can see examples of our work in Procover’s project gallery.

Haymes vs Dulux FAQs

Is Haymes paint good?

Haymes offers interior and exterior products worth shortlisting. Expressions and Solashield serve different purposes, so choose the exact range, sheen and preparation system for the job. A brand-wide rating cannot tell you whether a particular product suits your surface.

Is Haymes cheaper than Dulux?

It depends on the specific product, tint base, pack size and supplier. Compare current equivalent prices and include preparation and the specified coats before deciding which offers better project value.

Does Haymes cover in one coat?

Do not assume that it does. Hiding the previous colour is different from applying the required coating thickness. Follow the exact product instructions; Solashield Low Sheen specifies at least two coats, or three on bare timber.

Which lasts longer outside: Solashield or Weathershield?

There is no defensible universal lifespan ranking here. The substrate, preparation, colour, weather exposure and maintenance affect the result. Both have conditional guarantees, which cover specified defects rather than establishing a repaint interval.

Can I use either brand over existing paint?

Often a repaint is possible, but first check that the old coating is sound and compatible. Follow the manufacturer’s adhesion, preparation and priming instructions. A new topcoat cannot stabilise a failing layer underneath it.
